Film scanning designed around the negative, not a generic scanner preset

YRK Labs uses a custom-profiled medium-format camera scanning system with a specialized RGB light source, ANR film flattening and Rodenstock reproduction optics. The aim is to record the information in the negative cleanly while preserving the grain and tonal character that make film look like film.

Standard services include digitizing and colour balancing. Routine dust spotting is included, while heavy restoration, damaged film and unusually demanding archival work are quoted separately. RAW capture files can be supplied on request for photographers who want maximum downstream flexibility.

Medium-format camera capture

A high-resolution camera-based workflow creates flexible files without relying on interpolation from a consumer flatbed.

RGB film illumination

A specialized light source is used as part of the colour-managed camera-scanning setup.

Consistent film flatness

ANR glass helps hold the film flat for sharpness and field consistency.

Reproduction optics

Rodenstock optics support high sharpness and even reproduction across the frame.

RAW on request

Photographers who prefer to handle more of the conversion themselves can request RAW capture files.

Film is flattened and photographed with the camera-scanning system.

Balance & clean

Scans are colour balanced and routine dust spotting is completed.

Deliver

Receive the finished high-resolution files; specialty and RAW workflows are available by arrangement.

YRK Labs serves artists, photographers and creative professionals across Metro Vancouver and the surrounding Lower Mainland. Drop-off and pickup are by appointment. For oversized originals, archive projects or unusual formats, send the dimensions and intended use before bringing the work in.

FAQ

Do you develop film?

The current service is scanning and colour balancing; film development is not included.

Do you scan both 35mm and 120?

Yes. Both 35mm and 120 / medium-format film are supported.

Can I get RAW files?

Yes. RAW capture can be supplied on request for photographers who want maximum control in their own workflow.

Can you restore damaged negatives?

Routine dust spotting is included. Heavier work such as scratches, mould, fading, tears or other restoration is quoted separately.
